An inaugural general meeting was held at the Pontian Indian Association Hall. Sardar Jagir Singh Cheema was elected as the President of the building committee, which comprised Sardar Joginder Singh Didarewala, Sardar Jasbir Singh Dhale-Ke Moga, Sardar Kehar Singh Himmaputra, Sardar Santokh Singh Sangatpura, Sardar Teja Singh Pekan Nenas, Sardar Bachan Singh Cheema, Sardar Karnail Singh Shooshak, Sardar Jawand Singh Didarewala and Sardar Jang Singh Kot Kapura.
The Sikh Sangat decided to purchase a piece of land which was 17,013 square feet. This land was untouched jungle and did not even have an approach road. The Sikh Sangat, under the leadership of Sardar Jangir Singh Cheema and Sardar Kehar Singh Himmatpura took six months to clear the jungle and build the access road, which still exists today. A temporary wooden building which served as the Gurdwara Sahib was built at a cost of RM3,200 and completed in August 1965.
The decision to purchase the land came after an application to the Tuan Pemungut Hasil Tanah Pontian for a plot of land for the Gurdwara was not successful.
On this day the Sikh holy book, Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji, was ceremoniously installed in this Gurdwara Sahib building.
Sardar Kehar Singh Himmaputra, an ex-police pensioner, started performing the Sewa as a Granthi Sahib. Phai Sahib served the Gurdwara for 34 years as a Granthi and in various positions on the committee. His Sewa as Granthi was without salary and any money received by him for prayers or Ardas were donated to the Gurdwara Golak. The Gurdwara is truly blessed to have had such a noble soul amongst us. He eventually became known as Phai Sahib and is affectionately remembered as Phai Sahib Kehar Singh.
The foundation stone of the new Gurdwara Sahib building was laid by Sant Baba Fateh Singh Ji, President of the Shiromani Akali Dal (Amritsar) Party and witnessed by Sant Baba Sohan Singh Ji of Malacca.
The District Officer of Pontian was approached by Jasbir Singh to have the road leading to the Gurdwara Sahib officially named Lorong Gurdwara. This request was humbly approved by the authorities. This would be amongst the few streets in the country that has the name Jalan Gurdwara, and may even be the first.
The construction of the new Gurdwara Sahib building commenced and was completed in March 1976 at a cost of RM45,000, out of which RM10,000 was kindly donated by the Johor State Government.
The new Gurdwara Sahib building was officially declared open by the Menteri Besar of Johor state, Y.A.B. Tan Sri Datuk Haji Othman bin Haji Mohd Saat.
More than 700 Sikhs from Johor Bahru, Segamat, Kluang, Batu Pahat, Kuala Lumpur and Singapore were present during the occasion. To welcome the Menteri Besar, a cultural Bhangra group under Sardar Nashatar Singh Nihang and the Punjabi Gatka pair, Gian Mahinder Singh Srur and Giani Anokh Singh, gave an outstanding performance which was greatly appreciated by all present.
