50th Anniversary Celebration of Gurdwara Sahib Pontian
Gurdwara Sahib Pontian, beginnings started in the 1950s, when a few Sikh families, who were mostly employed as watchmen, cloth merchants, money lenders and policeman. To serve their religious needs, they decided to build a Gurdwara Sahib. An inaugural general meeting was held at the Pontian Indian Association Hall on the 25th of February 1963. Sardar Jangir Singh Cheema was elected as the President of the building committee, which comprised Sardar Joginder Singh Didarewala, Sardar Jasbir Singh Johl (Dhale-Ke-Moga), Sardar Kehar Singh Himmaputra, Sardar Santokh Singh Sangatpura, Sardar Teja Singh Pekan Nenas, Sardar Bachan Singh Cheema, Sardar Karnail Singh Shooshak, Sardar Jawand Singh Didarewala and Sardar Jang Singh Kot Kapura.
On 2nd August 1964, the Sikh Sangat decided to purchase a plot of land which was 17,013 sq ft/55, 539 shares (undivided lot). This land consisted of jungle without any approach road. The Sikh Sangat, under the leadership of Sardar Jangir Singh Cheema and Phai Sahib Kehar Singh Himmatpura took six months to clear the jungle and build the existing access road. A temporary wooden Gurdwara Sahib building was built at a cost of RM3,200 and completed in August 1965.
Shri Guru Granth Sahib Ji, was ceremoniously installed in the Gurdwara Sahib building on 28th August 1965 and Sardar Kehar Singh Himmaputra, an ex-police pensioner, started performing the Sewa as a Granthi Sahib. Phai Sahib while working as a watchman and upon his retirement, served the Gurdwara for 34 years as a Granthi and in the various position in the committee. His Sewa as Granthi was without salary and any money received by him for prayers or Ardas will be donated to the Gurdwara Golak. The Gurdwara is truly blessed to have such a noble soul amongst us. He eventually became known as Phai Sahib.
On 4th September 1966, the foundation stone of the new Gurdwara Sahib building was laid by Sant Baba Fateh Singh Ji, President of the Shiromani Akali Dal (Amritsar) Party and witnessed by Sant Baba Sohan Singh Ji of Malacca.
On 26th November 1969, the District Officer of Pontian was approached by Sardar Jasbir Singh Johl to have the road leading to the Gurdwara Sahib officially named Lorong Gurdwara. This request was approved by the authorities. This would be amongst the few streets in the country that has the name Lorong Gurdwara and could be the first.
The construction of the new Gurdwara Sahib building commenced in November 1970 and was completed in March 1976 at a cost of RM45,000, out of which RM10,000 was kindly donated by the Johor state government. The new Gurdwara Sahib building was officially declared open by YAB Menteri Besar of Johor state, Y.A.B. Tan Sri Datuk Haji Othman bin Haji Mohd Saat, on Sunday 28th March 1976. More than 700 Sikhs from Johor Bahru, Segamat, Kluang, Batu Pahat, Kuala Lumpur and Singapore were present during the occasion. To welcome the Menteri Besar, a cultural Bhangra group under Sardar Nashatar Singh Nihang and the Punjabi Gatka pair, Gian Mahinder Singh Srur and Giani Anokh Singh, gave an outstanding performance which was greatly appreciated by all present.
In August 2002, the Darbar Sahib caught fire and was severely damaged, Sardar Kulwant Singh, Sardar Gurdeep Singh, Gyani Ude Singh and Sardar Lachman Singh, undertook the fund raising to rebuild the Darbar Sahib and renovate the Gurdwara Sahib, the existing structure is the result of the last renovation in 2005. The renovation cost was almost RM 400,000 and Gurdwara Sahib Pontian, begin with a new facade and extension.
The Sangat looks forward to the 28th March 2026 when we officially start our donation drive “PAY IT FORWARD”, 351 Shri Akandh Path Sahib Ji, marking our 50th Anniversary!
